A water meter is a simple and reliable instrument that measures the volume of water that passes from the public watermain to your home or business. It allows us to accurately charge you for your water use and helps spot even the smallest leaks in your plumbing - to help you conserve water and save money!
Like a car odometer, your water meter displays how much water you used over the course of a day. The numbers that display on the odometer indicate how many cubic feet of water have been used. One cubic foot equals 7.48 gallons.
To calculate the number of gallons of water you used, multiply the number of cubic feet by 7.48. For example, if your meter shows that you have used 1250 cubic feet today and 1305 cubic feet seven days later, you have used 41,250 gallons of water since your meter was installed.
Your meter may be located inside or outside your home in a cement or metal box. Some meters have a small, hinged lid while others are locked. To open these boxes, use a channel lock wrench or a long screwdriver to pry the lid off.
How to Find Your Water Meter
If you don’t know where your water meter is located, look for it in the front of your house. It should be in a cement or metal box with a black plastic cover.Using a long screwdriver, pry off the lid and check the number moving on the meter. If it has changed, you likely have a leak in your plumbing. Turn off all your taps and appliances and jot down the reading on the meter. Then wait about 30 to 45 minutes and check again.
